4-H Teen Leadership Opportunity
The Westmoreland/Richmond County 4-H program is now recruiting teens who are interested in serving in a leadership role at 2025 4-H Jr. Camp. Youth interested in serving as Teen Leaders must be at least 14 years old by 1/1/2025 to be eligible to apply and must be available to serve for the Westmoreland and Richmond County’s camping week – June 30 – July 4, 2025.
Teen leaders serve a critical role while at camp. Major responsibilities include:
• Supervising campers during the camping session
• Providing for the safety and well-being of each camper
• Assisting with camp classes, programs and activities
• Helping to supervise campers in cabins and lodges
• Being on time and present for all assigned activities
• Following the rules laid out in the 4-H Code of Conduct
• Treating all camp participants with respect and dignity
Teens must demonstrate a willingness to work as a member of a team with other teens and adults, summer camp staff, and under the supervision, guidance, direction, and leadership of the Extension staff in charge of the 4-H camping program. Teens should be able and willing to accept and perform leadership roles (being a “leader”) and be able and willing to work as a member of the team when others are in the leadership position (being a “follower”).
Training is required to serve as a teen leader. Too many missed trainings will result in not being selected to serve. An orientation session for teens and parents will be held at 6:30pm on Feb 13. More information will be provided to those who apply but if you have questions before applying, please contact Wendy Herdman at wherdman@vt.edu.
Applications are available now and can be requested by calling the Extension Office or by completing a survey found at this link: https://bit.ly/254HTeenLeaderInterest. Applications will be sent by email unless the applicant requests otherwise. References listed in the application will receive a separate reference survey by email. Deadline for application with references listed inside is 5pm on January 17, 2025. Application does not guarantee selection.
If you are a person with a disability and desire assistance or accommodation, please notify the Westmoreland Extension Office at 804-493-8924/TDD* or the Richmond County Extension Office at 804-333-3420/TDD* during business hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. *TDD number is (800) 828-1120.
